5 Year Anniversary of the Minot Train Derailment, the largest chemical spill in U.S. history

1/25/2007 6:21:49 PM in Meanderings by Matt

The Minot Train Derailment occurred in Minot, North Dakota on 18 January 2002. At approximately 2:30 a.m. local time, a Canadian Pacific train derailed about 4 miles west of the city center, in a development called Terracita Vallejo. Tanker cars carrying anhydrous ammonia ruptured, spewing out a huge cloud of poisonous gas that quickly enveloped adjoining residential areas. The anhydrous ammonia spill was the largest such spill in U.S. history.

Emergency response to the disaster was confused at best. The late hour was a problem, as many media outlets were offline or unstaffed: KMOT was the only television station on air at the time; KXMC rushed to air early to cover the disaster; KXND and KMCY, without production staff, did not interrupt programming when they came to air.

Clear Channel Communications was blamed for not keeping overnight staff at its Minot stations; no emergency warning was issued for several hours while Minot officials located the station manager at home. The incident has been cited as an example of the physical dangers of media consolidation. Source

In excess of 300,000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia was released from the ruptured tanker cars. One tanker car was propelled over 600 feet in the air and skidded another 500 feet on the ground, crashing through a corner of a nearby house. Part of another tanker car landed on the ice of the Souris River.

.A dense anhydrous ammonia cloud drifted through low lying areas of the city. A temperature inversion, with sub-zero temperatures and no wind, prevented the cloud from dissipating. One fatality occurred, 15 people were hospitalized, and eventually over 1600 people sought medical treatment for anhydrous ammonia exposure. Source (PDF)

Captain Midnight and the Max Headroom Pirate

1/10/2007 6:21:32 PM in Meanderings | Video by Matt

There used to be a time when this was possible - back in the wild days of cable and New Wave, the 1980's.

John R. MacDougall, also known as Captain Midnight, is an electronic engineer and business owner, who jammed HBO's satellite signal in 1986 to broadcast a message protesting their rates for satellite dish owners.
During a broadcast of the Dr. Who episode "Horror of Fang Rock" on WTTW Chicago Channel 11, on Sunday November 22nd, 1987, at around 11:15pm, a Video "Pirate" wearing a Max Headroom mask broke into the signal and transmitted one of the weirdest, unauthorized things ever to hit the Chicago airwaves.
Earlier in the evening on the same day, during the Nine O'Clock News on Channel 9 the Max Headroom Pirate also broke in - although it was for a much shorter time and there was no audio.

Here's a summary of what happened:

1) On Channel 9 (WGN) in Chicago, the 9 o'clock news was interrupted during the sports section.

2) For about half a minute, a character in a Max Headroom mask came on the screen (with a moving background too).

3) Channel 9 (WGN) cancelled out the signal after about half a minute.

4) About 2 hours later, on Channel 11 (PBS) in Chicago, the Max Headroom TV pirate came on again. This time Max Headroom did a little skit where he would drink a can of Pepsi and throw it away and other antics. Toward the end of the skit, the man with the Max Headroom mask dropped his pants, mooned the screen, and was spanked with a fly swatter. The entire episode took place while the science-fiction series Dr. Who was being broadcasted. The skit lasted for about a minute and a half. The pirate stopped the broadcast on his own (Channel 11 didn't knock it off the air). Since Channel 11 is public, it didn't really have the power to knock the broadcast off.. so Max Headroom might have been on for half an hour if he wanted to be. Some words were heard but most of it was blurred.

This TV pirate used an extremely powerful transmitter (and very expensive too) to knock out the other signals. Source
